Sermon Notes for January 8, 2017

+Today’s Sermon:        “Bearing the Gospel of Peace”

+ Introduction / Question:

“How am I to bear the Gospel of peace following Jesus?”

Memory Verse for the Epiphany Season:

“Peace I leave you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.

Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

(John 14:27)

+ Sermon points:

  1. Ask yourself: “Do I trust Jesus to give me deep and lasting peace?”

“…a bruised reed He will not break, and a faintly burning wick He will not quench.”                                                                                    (Isaiah 42:3; John 14:27)

  1. Ask yourself: “Do I believe that God purposely gave Jesus to forgive my sins and give me His deep and lasting peace?”

“But Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all

                                              righteousness.”                                                                                 (Matthew 3:15; Ephesians 2:13 - 14a)

  1. Ask yourself: “Am I alive to God in Jesus bearing the Gospel of peace so my family, friends and others come to saving faith in Jesus and receive His deep and lasting peace?”

“So you must also consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.”

                         (Romans 6:2, 11; Philippians 4:8 - 9)

+Conclusion / Question:

“How am I to bear the Gospel of peace following Jesus?”

(Sermon Notes prepared by Pastor Warren A. Reichert for Grace Lutheran Church, Eaton, Ohio, January 8, 2017)

How to pray? A plan to help you “follow”* God in prayer:

Set a time and place for your prayer time with God (Start slowly and add times until you pray each day.)

Read the Gospel or another Scripture Lesson from today’s worship (see the Sermon Notes to direct your prayer time). Begin your prayer time asking yourself:

  1. What is one main thought, key insight or truth I gained from this passage?

  1. What does this thought, insight or truth say to you about bearing the peace Jesus gives us?

  1. Ask God to help you apply His Word to your life as you live with Jesus’ gift of grace (Start your prayer: “Lord, I ask …” or “Lord, help me to…”).

Try writing your responses to the questions in a spiral notebook or composition notebook. Be gentle with yourself. Take your time with this new effort. Let the Word of God guide you following Christ. Look back over your first week, month, and so on, and see how the Lord is calling you to follow Him through His Word and with prayer.
