Sermon Notes for January 22, 2017

+Today’s Sermon:        “Bearing Peace With Jesus’ Purpose”

+ Introduction / Question:

“How am I to bear the Gospel of peace with Jesus’ purpose?”

Memory Verse for the Epiphany Season:

“Peace I leave you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.

Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

(John 14:27)

+ Sermon points:

  1. Ask yourself: “Am I trusting Jesus to unburden me from sin?”

“For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.”                                                        (Isaiah 9:4; Judges 6 - 7)

  1. Ask yourself: “Am I trusting Jesus saved me as He died for me?”

“For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”                                                                 (1 Corinthians 1:18; Romans 1:16)

  1. Ask yourself: “Am I trusting Jesus makes me His peacemaker with my family, friends and others so they follow Him and trust in the peace His salvation gives them?”

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”

                         (Matthew 5:9; Galatians 3:26 - 28)

+Conclusion / Question:

“How am I to bear the Gospel of peace with Jesus’ purpose?”

(Sermon Notes prepared by Pastor Warren A. Reichert for Grace Lutheran Church, Eaton, Ohio, January 22, 2017)

How to pray? A plan to help you “follow”* God in prayer:

(*Mark 1:17: ESV - “And Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.")

Set a time and place for your prayer time with God (Start slowly and add times until you pray each day.)

Read the Gospel or another Scripture Lesson from today’s worship (see the Sermon Notes to direct your prayer time). Begin your prayer time asking yourself:

  1. What is one main thought, key insight or truth I gained from this passage?

  1. What does this thought, insight or truth say to you about trusting Jesus’ purpose and receiving His peace?

  1. Ask God to help you apply His Word to your life as you live with Jesus’ gift of grace (Start your prayer: “Lord, I ask …” or “Lord, help me to…”).

Try writing your responses to the questions in a spiral notebook or composition notebook. Be gentle with yourself. Take your time with this new effort. Let the Word of God guide you following Christ. Look back over your first week, month, and so on, and see how the Lord is calling you to follow Him through His Word and with prayer.
