Sermon Notes for January 1, 2017

+Today’s Sermon:            “Just the Right Name for You!”

+ Introduction / Question:

“How is Jesus’ Name just the right name for my life?”

Memory Verse for the Christmas Season

“But to all who did receive Him (Jesus), who believed in His Name, He gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor or the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”

(John 1:12-13)

+ Sermon points:

  1. Ask yourself: “Do I ignore the importance of Jesus Name for me?”

“So they shall put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”                                                                                            (Numbers 6:27; Exodus 20:7)

  1. Ask yourself: “Do I believe that God planned to gave Jesus for

my salvation and eternal life?”

“And at the end of eight days, when He was circumcised, He was called Jesus, the Name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.”                                                                                                             (Luke 2:21; Acts 4:12)

  1. Ask yourself: “Am I willing to submit my life to Jesus and confess He is my Lord and Savior so my family, friends and others come to salvation and eternal life through Him?”

“Therefore, God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the Name that is above every name, so that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

                                  (Philippians 2:9 - 11)

+Conclusion / Question:

“How is Jesus’ Name just the right name for my life?”

How to pray? A plan to help you “follow”* God in prayer:

Set a time and place for your prayer time with God (Start slowly and add times until you pray each day.)

Read the Gospel or another Scripture Lesson from today’s worship (see the Sermon Notes to direct your prayer time). Begin your prayer time asking yourself:

  1. What is one main thought, key insight or truth I gained from this passage?

  1. What does this thought, insight or truth say to you about Jesus and His Name?

  1. Ask God to help you apply His Word to your life as you live with Jesus’ gift of grace (Start your prayer: “Lord, I ask …” or “Lord, help me to…”).

Try writing your responses to the questions in a spiral notebook or composition notebook. Be gentle with yourself. Take your time with this new effort. Let the Word of God guide you following Christ. Look back over your first week, month, and so on, and see how the Lord is calling you to follow Him through His Word and with prayer.
